Dear Deep River Parents,

Here are your quick email points for this week. There are quite a few! Please be sure to also go to our school website or follow us on Twitter @DRES_Principal.  The PTO would also like you to check out the DRES PTO Facebook page for upcoming activities!  The October School Newsletter is now up on our webpage and Virtual Backpack. THE DRES PTO USED GOODS DRIVE IS EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 30th!  Please refer to the information below!

The following flyers are up in the Virtual Backpack!

  • Veterans Day Stars for the DRES Main Hallway
  • Box Top Collection Sheet and Information
  • DRES PTO Bingo Flyer
  • DRES PTO Used Goods Flyer
  • DRES UnFundraiser Flyer
  • DRES Family Hike Information
  • Park and Rec “Trick or Trunk” Event
  • Park and Rec Musical Description and Registration Form

  • Last week, vision screening was completed for the entire school.Screening was done using the Spot Vision method.  The Spot Vision camera tests for near and far-sightedness, astigmatism (curvature of lens),amblyopia(lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), unequal refractive power, and unequal pupil size.  We are grateful that the Lions Club provides with our testing equipment each year.  If your child did NOT pass the screening, you will receive a vision screening summary suggesting a complete eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

  • While Halloween is certainly on everybody’s mind, Veterans Day is also just around the corner. With that in mind here are some of the efforts that we are putting in place to recognize our veterans:

  1. Attached to this email is a “Veteran Star” that you and your child can complete and bring in to school to help recognize a veteran that you know.  Stars that are submitted will be put up in the building next month in honor of Veterans Day.

  1. DON’T FORGET, information regarding our Annual Deep River Drawing and Essay Contest was sent home to all students.  Our local American Legion organizes this contest.  We ask that you take a moment to discuss it with your child and hopefully participate.  We are hoping to really build and increase our participation in this event this year to show our support to our local American Legion.  All sixth graders should be aware that participation in this essay contest is now a prerequisite for consideration for the annual Edward Weselcouch writing award. ALL ENTRIES ARE DUE BY OCTOBER 27th.

  • The PTO is hosting 2 Family Fall Hikes. Please join them on October 22 at Bushy Hill or November 5 at Turtle Creek Sanctuary.  See attached flyer for more details.

  • Deep River Parks & Recreation is holding their Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 28.  Please see attached flyer for more details.

  • Once again, we are asking for your support with our annual “Un-Fundraiser”. Simply put, an Un-Fundraiser is a fundraiser where kids do not have to sell anything, parents do not have to buy anything and 100% of your donation goes directly to the DRES PTO. In turn, these funds help us pay for things such as drums & xylophones for the instrumental programs, picnic tables for the courtyard, furniture, air conditioners, and Day of the Arts performers for the Deep River Elementary School. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

  • DRES PTO Used Goods Drive 8 AM, October 16th - 1 PM, October 30th !!!

The DRES PTO Used Goods Fundraiser costs you zero dollars, ZERO!!! And it brings in hundreds of dollars that we can spend on all our kids!! How cool is that?

It’s time to get rid of all the clothes that your kids have outgrown and DRES PTO would like to help you clear out your clutter. Beany Babies taking over your home? Toss’em.   Playroom too cluttered? Just rake it up.  If you haven't worn it in 2 years, get rid of it. If it doesn't fit or make you feel fabulous, bag it up and drop it off in our covered container.

Where: 56 High Street, TriTown Youth Services parking lot on High Street. When: from 8 AM, Monday, October 16th to 1 PM, Friday, October 20th.

This will be the only Used Goods Drive this year and possibly the last one ever due to increased restrictions on accepted items.

Used goods accepted: Clothing, linens, curtains, shoes, belts, handbags, sports equipment, TOYS (hard or soft, including stuffed animals), small rugs, art supplies.

Not accepted: anything breakable, no glass or china, no electronics or any kind of appliance.  No books, board games, puzzles, bikes, furniture or large items.

Please, please adhere to these restrictions!  Last year, many items were dropped off and we had a record number of donations.  Sadly, many of the boxes included unacceptable items so we got zero credit for those bags and we actually made less than other years.

Please spread the word, ask your coworkers, neighbors, inlaws etc.

All used goods must be bagged in large kitchen bags or contractor bags (please tie bags closed).  Change this year, NO BOXES. It must fit in a bag.  If it doesn’t fit, sorry, we can’t take it.

We get paid by the pound, start sorting now!

If you have questions about acceptability of items email Jeni Gray-Roberts at jenigrayroberts@aol.com.

  • Please continue to send in those Box Tops!!!

  • Calling all 5th & 6th grade Boys and Girls!
