Dear Deep River Elementary Families,
Welcome to Deep River Elementary School! My name is Mr. Christian Strickland and I am proud to be serving our students and the community of Deep River. Deep River Elementary School is part of Regional School District #4 and benefits from a highly supportive central office staff. As part of the Region #4 District, we are committed to the following vision statement:
Our schools endeavor to develop an educational program of excellence where all students achieve at high levels and best instructional strategies are pursued in an environment of inquiry, collaboration, support and trust.
The 2016 - 2017 school year will be incredibly exciting as we work together Regionally with our work on Strategic Planning, the integration of 1:1 technological devices in grades 2 – 6, the implementation of the Fundations program in second grade and the piloting of new math resources in grades K – 5. This year is sure to hold to our belief of “collaborative and continuous improvement” at DRES and in Region 4 as a whole.
Our school population for the 2016 – 2017 school year is made up of 271 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Our teachers have been hard at work this summer preparing the classrooms for our students in what promises to be an exciting year. Teachers at Deep River Elementary School work diligently and collaboratively with our Region 4 colleagues to effectively teach and help our students meet the Common Core State Standards. In literacy, we implement the Workshop Model as our instructional delivery model in order to expose our students to multiple genres and develop critical thinking skills. In math we will focus on the standards through programs such as Math Investigations and Encore as students are provided with opportunities to build effective problem solving strategies. In addition to instruction in the areas of Science and Social Studies, our students also attend classes in Physical Education, Music, Art, Library and Spanish. Additionally, we look to provide enrichment opportunities through programs such as our Book, Sport, Dance, Multicultural, Computer and Green Clubs, Jazz Band, Student Council and our Peer Mediation Team. Students are invited each year to take part in our school wide Science Fair, and students in grades 5 and 6 are welcome to submit their entries for the Invention Convention. At Deep River Elementary School, teachers work to plan lessons that help students succeed through their own efforts and become self-motivated by their learning and talents. We are dedicated to immersing students in a rigorous curriculum while meeting the needs of all learners. In addition, every child’s social and emotional growth is a critical component of what we do at DRES.
The staff, along with the support of our parents and the greater Deep River Community, works very hard to form a successful partnership. The DRES Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is highly involved in our efforts to support students. For this reason, we highly encourage all families to be active members. Events such as BINGO Night, Fall and Spring Book Fairs, Field Days, Day of the Arts, Cultural Assembly Programs, and the Sixth Grade Night Reception help to bring our school and local community together. Your support of these events is greatly appreciated. During the past school year, funding from our PTO assisted in purchasing instruments for our music program as well as iPad charging stations for our students. I encourage you to use our website (http://www.dres.reg4.k12.ct.us) which serves as an information “hub” for you during the school year. Upcoming events, teacher-web pages, our monthly newsletter and other pertinent information can be found here. In addition, we also have our “Virtual Backpack” located on our school website. This is where you will find additional information and handouts for families as the year progresses. We will continue to use our “Alert Solutions” broadcast system for school closings and other time sensitive information. Please be sure we have your most recent phone numbers and primary email on record. Contact our front office if you need to update your information.
Deep River Elementary School is ready to welcome your children to the 2016 – 2017 school year. We wish you a happy and successful school experience.
Christian J. Strickland
