Principal's Message

Dear Deep River Elementary Families,

Welcome to Deep River Elementary School! My name is Mr. Christian Strickland and I am proud to be serving our students and the community of Deep River. Deep River Elementary School is part of Regional School District #4 and benefits from a highly supportive central office staff. As part of the Region #4 District, we are committed to the following mission statement:

We the communities of Chester, Deep River, Essex and Region #4 engage all students in a rigorous and collaborative educational program. We prepare our learners to be respectful citizens who are empowered to contribute in a globalized society.

We believe the following are essential for success:

  • Understanding all students have the ability to continually learn and grow.
  • Relevant instruction and student engagement.
  • Safety, support and a positive learning environment.
  • A constructive partnership among the students, families, school system and community.

The 2017 - 2018 school year will continue to be one of collaborative and continuous improvement.  We will be working diligently to implement the Region #4 Strategic Plan that was built last year to help ensure our vision for the K – 12 learning experience in Region #4. Additionally we will be implementing the Bridge math program in grades K – 5 to provide fidelity and rigor in our math instruction.  This is once again sure to be an exciting year that helps to further establish the high expectations we have for ourselves and the education we provide for your children.

Our school population for the 2017 – 2018 school year is made up of 262 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Our teachers have been hard at work this summer preparing the classrooms for our students in what promises to be an exciting year.  Teachers at Deep River Elementary School work diligently and collaboratively with our Region 4 colleagues to effectively teach and help our students meet the Common Core State Standards.  In literacy, we implement the Workshop Model as our instructional delivery model in order to expose our students to multiple genres and develop critical thinking skills.  As mentioned, in math we will focus on the standards through programs such as Bridges as students are provided with opportunities to build effective problem solving strategies. In addition to instruction in the areas of Science and Social Studies, our students also attend classes in Physical Education, Music, Art, Library and Spanish.  We also look to provide enrichment opportunities through programs such as our Book, Sport, Dance, Multicultural, Computer and Green Clubs, Jazz Band, Student Council, Math Olympiad and our Peer Mediation Team. Students are invited each year to take part in our school wide Science Fair, and students in grades 5 and 6 are welcome to submit their entries for the Invention Convention. At Deep River Elementary School, teachers work to plan lessons that help students succeed through their own efforts and become self-motivated by their learning and talents. We are dedicated to immersing students in a rigorous curriculum while meeting the needs of all learners.  In addition, every child’s social and emotional growth is a critical component of what we do at DRES.

The staff, along with the support of our parents and the greater Deep River Community, works very hard to form a successful partnership.  The DRES Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is highly involved in our efforts to support students. For this reason, we highly encourage all families to be active members.  Events such as BINGO Night, Fall and Spring Book Fairs, Field Days, Day of the Arts, STEM Day, Cultural Assembly Programs, and the Sixth Grade Night Reception help to bring our school and local community together. Your support of these events is greatly appreciated. I encourage you to use our website ( which serves as an information “hub” for you during the school year.  Upcoming events, teacher-web pages, our monthly newsletter and other pertinent information can be found here. In addition, we also have our “Virtual Backpack” located on our school website.  This is where you will find additional information and handouts for families as the year progresses. We will continue to use our “Alert Solutions” broadcast system for school closings and other time sensitive information.  Please be sure we have your most recent phone numbers and primary email on record. Contact our front office if you need to update your information.

Deep River Elementary School is ready to welcome your children to the 2017 – 2018 school year.  We wish you a happy and successful school experience.

Christian J. Strickland
